Oligopeptide-68: Advanced Biomimetic Peptide for Comprehensive Skin Brightening

Oligopeptide-68 is a TGF-β biomimetic signal peptide engineered for advanced cosmetic skin brightening. By actively downregulating the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), it comprehensively inhibits both constitutive (default) and facultative (UV-induced) melanin synthesis. This unique upstream MITF suppression subsequently decreases the expression of crucial melanogenic enzymes, including tyrosinase, TRP-1, and TRP-2. Consequently, Oligopeptide-68 is positioned as a premium, non-irritating alternative to traditional tyrosinase inhibitors for advanced tone-evening and anti-aging skincare systems.

Market context: Leading cosmetic raw material suppliers position actives containing Oligopeptide-68, such as β-White™, as eco-friendly, liposome-encapsulated biomimetic ingredients for rapid, progressive skin brightening. Competitor messaging heavily emphasizes its unique upstream MITF-pathway inhibition to differentiate it from traditional, potentially irritating tyrosinase inhibitors like hydroquinone. Formulate Labs supplies the INCI active, Oligopeptide-68, exclusively in our stock carriers and does NOT sell or represent supplier-branded SKUs like β-White™.

Recognizing the peptide’s sensitivity and poor water solubility, Formulate Labs offers Oligopeptide-68 as a 0.1% standard or 1% lab concentrate, expertly integrated into proprietary Glycerin/Water or Sea Kelp Bioferment suspensions. These advanced carriers are designed to protect the sensitive peptide from enzymatic degradation, ensuring optimal basal layer penetration to melanocytes for maximum efficacy in your formulations.

Hair & scalp note: just like Decapeptide-12, OP-68 has no utility in standard hair care. Applying a potent MITF inhibitor to the scalp would suppress melanin production in the hair-bulb matrix — if it penetrated the follicle, it could induce premature graying or whiten the growing hair shaft. You will only see Oligopeptide-68 in dedicated facial and body brightening formulas.*

Why formulators reach for it

Upstream MITF suppression for premium tone-evening positioning.

Oligopeptide-68 Brightens & Evens Skin Tone
Clinically proven to be superior to 4% hydroquinone for reducing facial melasma, Oligopeptide-68 effectively targets hyperpigmentation for a more uniform complexion.
Oligopeptide-68 Inhibits Melanin Synthesis
As a potent MITF pathway inhibitor, Oligopeptide-68 comprehensively suppresses both constitutive and UV-induced melanin production at an upstream level.
Oligopeptide-68 Offers a Non-Irritating Alternative
By targeting MITF, this peptide provides a premium, non-irritating mechanism for skin brightening, contrasting with traditional tyrosinase inhibitors.
Oligopeptide-68 Maximizes Basal Layer Penetration
When suspended in advanced carriers, Oligopeptide-68 is protected against enzymatic degradation, ensuring effective delivery to melanocytes in the basal layer.

Formulate Labs supplies Oligopeptide-68 (INCI) only; we do not sell or represent supplier trade-name SKUs such as β-White™.

Published research

Peer-reviewed literature for due diligence.

Oligopeptide-68 (beta-White) is positioned as a TGF-beta biomimetic that downregulates MITF — the master transcription factor for tyrosinase, TRP-1, and TRP-2 — providing an upstream alternative to direct tyrosinase inhibitors like Decapeptide-12. These are independent, third-party papers we link for formulators evaluating mechanism, tolerability, and published panel data. We did not conduct this research and do not guarantee replication in your finished formula.

Compliance & safety

The fine print, in plain English.

What it’s for
Cosmetic raw material for leave-on and rinse-off skincare where MITF-pathway brightening, tone-evening, hyperpigmentation, or whitening-positioned claims are intended (brightening serums, spot treatments, premium face and body lightening creams). Not for scalp or hair-care use. Not a finished consumer product; not for ingestion, injection, or unsupervised topical use outside a formulated finished product.
Claims guidance
Cosmetic structure / function language only (e.g. supports a more even-looking tone, supports a brighter-looking complexion, helps reduce the appearance of dark spots). Do not make drug claims for melasma cure, prescription depigmentation, or hair regrowth. Do not position for scalp, hair-shaft, or density use. Downstream finished-product claims must be substantiated by the brand.
Storage
  • Store between 2-25 °C in original sealed container away from direct light.
  • Cold storage extends shelf life by ~50% relative to room temperature.
  • Once opened, use within the period stated on the COA.
Regulatory
  • INCI: Oligopeptide-68 (per ICID and PCPC dictionary).
  • Not classified as hazardous based on currently available information per OSHA HazCom 2012 / GHS.
  • Compatible with FDA cosmetic regulations and EU 1223/2009 for the intended use.
  • SDS section 16 disclaimer applies; see the per-recipe SDS for the full classification.
Sensitivity
Oligopeptide-68 is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic use at the rates above; the supplier’s HET-CAM and AMES studies on the peptide indicate non-irritating and non-mutagenic behavior at industry-standard concentrations. The peptide is light-sensitive: store and ship in opaque containers, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight in finished formulations. Avoid prolonged contact with strong oxidisers, sulfuric or phosphoric acids, acetic anhydride, sustained heat at or above 40 °C after addition, high-shear processing once incorporated, and prolonged exposure to pH > 7.0 — any of these can hydrolyze the peptide, rupture liposomes, and reduce in-formula activity. Patch-test finished formulations per standard cosmetic protocol.
