The peptide

Nonapeptide-1: Precision Brightening Through Melanin Inhibition

Nonapeptide-1 is a synthetic, biomimetic peptide functioning as a competitive antagonist of the alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). By binding directly to the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) on the surface of melanocytes, it blocks the upstream signaling cascade that normally activates tyrosinase, effectively inhibiting melanin synthesis at its biological origin. In cosmetic science, Nonapeptide-1 is positioned as a highly targeted, non-cytotoxic skin-brightening active that addresses post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, and UV-induced dark spots without compromising overall melanocyte viability.

Market context: — Public B2B market pricing data for cosmetic peptides is sparse, but available wholesale quotes indicate that 98-99% pure Nonapeptide-1 powder and standard 1000 ppm liquid suspensions are readily available. Several prominent trade names utilize Nonapeptide-1, including Melanostatine™ 5 (Lucas Meyer Cosmetics), WKPep® Whitenin (Shenzhen Winkey Technology), and Cosroma® 9N-1 (COSROMA). Formulate Labs provides the pure INCI ingredient, Nonapeptide-1, and does not sell these branded trade-name SKUs.

Formulate Labs supplies Nonapeptide-1 in a stable 0.1% standard glycerin suspension, engineered for optimal integration into cosmetic formulations. This allows formulators to easily incorporate a potent concentration of the peptide, ensuring its targeted skin-brightening efficacy is preserved and delivered effectively in final products.

We supply it at 0.1% standard or 1% lab concentrate in glycerin or Sea Kelp Bioferment carriers.

Why formulators reach for it

A peptide with a long cosmetic-science track record.

Nonapeptide-1 Reduces Hyperpigmentation
Targets post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and dark spots by inhibiting melanin synthesis at its source.
Nonapeptide-1 Blocks Melanin Production
Acts as an α-MSH antagonist, blocking the MC1R signaling pathway to prevent tyrosinase activation.
Nonapeptide-1 Offers Non-Cytotoxic Brightening
Provides effective skin brightening without compromising the viability or health of melanocytes.
Nonapeptide-1 Evens Skin Tone
Helps achieve a more uniform complexion by addressing melasma and UV-induced discoloration.

Formulate Labs.ai supplies the pure INCI ingredient, Nonapeptide-1, only, and does not sell trade-name SKUs like Melanostatine™ 5, WKPep® Whitenin, or Cosroma® 9N-1.

Published research

Peer-reviewed literature for due diligence.

Nonapeptide-1 (Melanostatine) is documented in melanocortin-receptor peptide literature as an alpha-MSH antagonist sequence studied for cosmetic melanogenesis modulation. These are independent, third-party papers we link for formulators evaluating mechanism, tolerability, and published panel data. We did not conduct this research and do not guarantee replication in your finished formula.

Compliance & safety

The fine print, in plain English.

What it’s for
Cosmetic raw material - leave-on hair-care formulations (scalp serums, hair tonics, leave-on hair lotions, density-positioned conditioning treatments) at the use rates above; also acceptable in rinse-off cosmetic products and skincare formats where a peptide-based "supports the look of fuller hair" / scalp-comfort positioning is intended. Not a finished consumer product; not for ingestion, injection, or unsupervised topical use outside a formulated finished product.
Claims guidance
Cosmetic structure / function language only (e.g. supports a more even-looking tone, supports a brighter appearance). Avoid depigmentation drug language (“treats hyperpigmentation”, “bleaches skin”, “inhibits melanin production” as a drug claim). Do not make therapeutic claims. The peptide is studied in cosmetic in-vitro and panel work; downstream finished-product claims must be substantiated by the brand.
Storage
  • Store between 2-25 °C in original sealed container away from direct light.
  • Cold storage extends shelf life by ~50% relative to room temperature.
  • Once opened, use within the period stated on the COA.
Regulatory
  • INCI: Nonapeptide-1 (per ICID and PCPC dictionary).
  • Not classified as hazardous based on currently available information per OSHA HazCom 2012 / GHS.
  • Compatible with FDA cosmetic regulations and EU 1223/2009 for the intended use.
  • SDS section 16 disclaimer applies; see the per-recipe SDS for the full classification.
Sensitivity
Nonapeptide-1 is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic use at the rates above; the supplier’s HET-CAM and AMES studies on the peptide indicate non-irritating and non-mutagenic behavior at industry-standard concentrations. The peptide is light-sensitive: store and ship in opaque containers, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight in finished formulations. Avoid prolonged contact with strong oxidisers, sulfuric or phosphoric acids, acetic anhydride, sustained heat above 45 °C, and prolonged exposure to pH > 7.0 - any of these can hydrolyze the peptide and reduce in-formula activity. Patch-test finished formulations per standard cosmetic protocol.
