Gromwell root extract — shikonin-rich red botanical oil Lithospermum Erythrorhizon · Shikonin-class naphthoquinone
The extract

The multifunctional red bioactive from gromwell root.

Historically known as Gromwell Root, Murasaki, or Zicao, Lithospermum erythrorhizon has been used in traditional Asian medicine for centuries. In modern cosmetic chemistry it serves a dual purpose: a potent, clinically referenced active for barrier-support and scalp-soothing positioning, while naturally imparting a striking pink, red, or deep purple hue without synthetic dyes.*

Pathway 1 — NF-κB modulation: Shikonin, the primary lipophilic naphthoquinone, is positioned in literature for calming/redness-reduction cosmetic stories via pro-inflammatory cytokine pathway modulation — turning down irritation and cellular inflammation appearance in sensitive-skin formulas.*

Pathway 2 — Nrf2 & glycation defense: Published work links gromwell extract to antioxidant response element activation and glyoxalase-related glycation detoxification — relevant for anti-aging, photoaging-defense, and structural-protein stiffness appearance.*

Pathway 3 — MMP-1 & matrix support: In-vitro models report MMP-1 downregulation under oxidative and UV stress — cosmetic positioning for collagen-matrix and photoaging-defense serums.*

We ship a fixed 5% Lithospermum Erythrorhizon Root Extract blend in your choice of MCT, high-oleic sunflower, jojoba, or squalane — each with SDS/TDS matched to the carrier deck you select.*

Why formulators reach for it

Science-backed cosmetic positioning.

NF-κB pathway modulation*
Shikonin-class naphthoquinones are positioned in literature for calming/redness-reduction cosmetic stories via pro-inflammatory cytokine pathway modulation — not a drug claim.
Nrf2 & antioxidant defense*
Published work links gromwell extract to antioxidant response and glycation-related enzyme upregulation — relevant for anti-aging and photoaging-defense positioning.
MMP-1 & collagen matrix support*
In-vitro literature reports MMP-1 downregulation and collagen-protection positioning under oxidative and UV stress models.
Plant-powered pigment*
Natural pink-to-violet hue from shikonin supports synthetic dye-free color stories in facial oils, lip treatments, and oil serums.

Published research

Peer-reviewed literature for due diligence.

Lithospermum erythrorhizon (Gromwell / Zicao) and its shikonin bioactives appear in peer-reviewed skin, oxidative stress, glycation, and barrier-repair literature relevant to cosmetic chemists. These are independent, third-party papers we link for formulators evaluating mechanism, tolerability, and published panel data. We did not conduct this research and do not guarantee replication in your finished formula.

Compliance & safety

The fine print, in plain English.

What it’s for
Cosmetic raw material for oil-phase skincare and scalp care — facial oils, lip treatments, balm sticks, rescue balms, and hair-growth oil positioning at the use rates in the formulation guide. Add to the oil phase during cool-down. Not a finished consumer product.
Claims guidance
Cosmetic structure / function language only. Appropriate positioning includes calming/redness-reduction appearance, antioxidant and photoaging-defense stories, natural plant-powered pigment, and scalp-soothing cosmetic narratives. Do not make therapeutic claims (treats eczema, heals burns/wounds, anti-cancer, prescription drug claims). Downstream finished-product claims must be substantiated by the brand.
Storage
  • Store tightly closed in opaque or UV-blocking containers.
  • Protect from heat and direct sunlight; refrigerate optional for extended color retention.
  • Natural shikonin pigment may fade with prolonged light exposure — see TDS.
Regulatory
  • Finished-product INCI typically lists carrier oil, Lithospermum Erythrorhizon Root Extract, and Tocopherol (where present).
  • Cosmetic function classes: skin conditioning agent, antioxidant, colorant (functional pigment).
  • Full blend composition is disclosed on the SDS/TDS for the selected carrier.
  • Compatible with FDA cosmetic regulations and EU 1223/2009 for the intended cosmetic use when properly incorporated.
Handling
Heat-sensitive botanical extract — add below 40–45 °C. Avoid alkaline systems and strong oxidizers. Natural red pigment may stain surfaces and skin during handling. Patch-test finished formulations per standard cosmetic protocol.
