The extract

Chlorella Vulgaris: A Microalgae Powerhouse for Skin Vitality

Formulate Labs offers Chlorella Vulgaris Extract, a potent bioactive peptide and protein suspension derived from the marine microalgae Chlorella vulgaris. While sometimes referred to by common names like chlorella vulgaris powder or green microalgae in broader contexts, Formulate Labs provides the pure INCI ingredient, ensuring formulators receive the specific active without proprietary supplier blends.

Dual mechanism: Chlorella Vulgaris Extract operates through two primary pathways: first, its potent antioxidants neutralize reactive oxygen species, helping protect skin from environmental damage; second, low-molecular-weight peptides work to support the skin's structural integrity and resilience by stimulating collagen expression and inhibiting enzymes that degrade the dermal matrix [2, 3, 4].

Use levels: Typical use levels for this Standard or Concentrated hydroglycerin stock range from 1.0% to 5.0% in finished formulations. A concentration of 2.0% of the stock is frequently targeted for demonstrated cosmetic efficacy [7, 8].

Market context: Formulate Labs’ Chlorella Vulgaris Extract offers the core active found in several high-performance trade-name materials, providing versatile market positioning. It can be positioned for advanced firming and anti-aging applications, targeting concerns like vascular imperfections, dark circles, and stretch marks, similar to Dermochlorella DG-class actives. It also supports 'blue beauty' and soothing narratives for sensitive skin and inflammaging, akin to Sensityl™-class materials, and aligns with clean-beauty and biomodulating claims for cellular turnover and microbiome balance, as seen in ALGAKTIV® BioSKN / RetinART-class ingredients [17, 18, 19, 20, 21].

We ship standard or concentrated extract stock with selectable preservation - ready to meter into finished formulas at the use rates in the formulation guide below.*

Published research

Peer-reviewed literature for due diligence.

Chlorella Vulgaris Extract is supported by robust scientific research highlighting its multifunctionality in cosmetic applications. Studies demonstrate its ability to provide antioxidant protection, support skin structure, and modulate key signaling pathways involved in skin aging. These are independent, third-party papers we link for formulators evaluating mechanism, tolerability, and published panel data. We did not conduct this research and do not guarantee replication in your finished formula.

Peer-Reviewed

Anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging activities of Chlorella extracts via MAPK signaling suppression

See journal record

Chlorella extracts demonstrate significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, appearing to function by suppressing the MAPK signaling pathway. This mechanism supports its use in cosmetic formulas designed to reduce the visible signs of aging and environmental stress [5].

Peer-Reviewed

Topical application of Chlorella for improved skin hydration, elasticity, and tone

See journal record

Topical use of the extract can visibly improve skin condition by boosting hydration and enhancing the feeling of elasticity. Its ability to support collagen synthesis contributes to a more refined and even-looking skin tone [2, 6].

Peer-Reviewed

Protective effects of Chlorella-derived peptide on UVB-induced production of MMP-1 and degradation of procollagen genes in human skin fibroblasts

See journal record

This research validates the extract's role in helping protect skin cells from oxidative stress caused by environmental aggressors. This reinforces its value in daily-use protective and reparative skin care products [2].
