The peptide

Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9: A Key Peptide for Advanced Cosmetic Formulations

Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9 is a highly functional peptide raw material designed for incorporation into advanced cosmetic formulations. While its specific mechanism of action and comprehensive cosmetic positioning are elaborated in Formulate Labs’ detailed evidence brief, this ingredient is primarily suited for leave-on skin care applications.

Formulate Labs offers Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9 in a ready-to-use 0.1% standard glycerin suspension, providing formulators with an easy-to-integrate and consistently potent ingredient for their innovative product development.

Hair & scalp note: while AT-9 is a powerhouse in skin care, its footprint in hair care is negligible. Peptides like Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 target the ECM around the hair bulb for follicle anchoring; AT-9’s lumican / dermal Collagen I focus is not marketed for that pathway. You will not find it in growth-positioned hair formulas unless a brand is label-dusting a peptide blend — for active hair growth or structural hair repair, copper peptides or keratin-mimicking oligopeptides provide the actual clinical utility.*

Why formulators reach for it

ECM redensifying and firming with a mapped dual mechanism.

Formulate Labs supplies Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9 only and does not sell supplier trade-name SKUs such as Dermican.

Published research

Peer-reviewed literature for due diligence.

Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9 (Dermican) is a synthetic signaling peptide positioned on lumican stimulation and Collagen I synthesis — the dual pathway behind ECM redensifying and firming claims in premium anti-aging and body-care literature. These are independent, third-party papers we link for formulators evaluating mechanism, tolerability, and published panel data. We did not conduct this research and do not guarantee replication in your finished formula.

Compliance & safety

The fine print, in plain English.

What it’s for
Cosmetic raw material for leave-on and rinse-off skincare where ECM redensifying, firming, lifting, or skin-thickening positioning is intended (anti-aging serums, jawline contour creams, premium face and body firming lotions, anti-stretch-mark formats). Also acceptable in rinse-off personal-care products. Not intended for hair-growth or density-positioned hair care. Not a finished consumer product; not for ingestion, injection, or unsupervised topical use outside a formulated finished product.
Claims guidance
Cosmetic structure / function language only (e.g. supports a firmer-looking finish, supports a denser-looking dermis, helps improve the appearance of skin thickness). Avoid lumican drug language (“repairs dermal matrix”, “reverses skin aging”). Do not position for hair growth, follicle anchoring, or density. Downstream finished-product claims must be substantiated by the brand.
Storage
  • Store between 2-25 °C in original sealed container away from direct light.
  • Cold storage extends shelf life by ~50% relative to room temperature.
  • Once opened, use within the period stated on the COA.
Regulatory
  • INCI: Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9 (per ICID and PCPC dictionary).
  • Not classified as hazardous based on currently available information per OSHA HazCom 2012 / GHS.
  • Compatible with FDA cosmetic regulations and EU 1223/2009 for the intended use.
  • SDS section 16 disclaimer applies; see the per-recipe SDS for the full classification.
Sensitivity
Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9 is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic use at the rates above; the supplier’s HET-CAM and AMES studies on the peptide indicate non-irritating and non-mutagenic behavior at industry-standard concentrations. The peptide is light-sensitive: store and ship in opaque containers, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight in finished formulations. Avoid prolonged contact with strong oxidisers, sulfuric or phosphoric acids, acetic anhydride, sustained heat at or above 60 °C after addition, and prolonged exposure to pH > 8.0 — any of these can hydrolyze the peptide and reduce in-formula activity. Patch-test finished formulations per standard cosmetic protocol.
